What is the Release Conditions Feature?
Release Conditions allow a user to release locked items by fulfilling criteria. Items locked by Release Conditions will not be visible to the user until the criteria are fulfilled.
Why would you use the Release Conditions Feature?
Use the Release Conditions Feature in your course to:
- Restrict the sharing of content
- Control the delivery of assessments
- Regulate the distribution of communication
- Require learners to perform specified tasks prior to attempting a learning activity
Scenario 1: Independent Thought
Professor Saunders teaches a graphic design class. She feels that students learn a lot from seeing each other’s work and she also wants them to learn how to provide constructive feedback to each other. To prevent students copying from others by viewing their projects before finalizing their own, she put a condition on the Discussion topic so that the student must submit their work to the Dropbox first.
Megan Polanski is a graphic designer in Professor Saunders course. She enjoys sharing and discussing her work with other students in the course. Having to submit her work prior to sharing ensures that she is focused on her individual material rather than becoming influenced by others.
Benefit to the Professor/TA/Instructional Designer
Release Conditions can be used to require a student to complete a task prior to being permitted to engage in a collaborative activity that may assist them with the previous task.
How does it enhance my teaching?
Release Conditions allow Professors to control the participation in specific areas of the course.
How does it enhance my student’s learning?
Students are required to complete specified tasks prior to moving onto other areas of the course.
Scenario 2: Task Control
Professor Saunders is having her students complete a research project on deforestation. In the past, projects have not been fully completed or thought out. She wants to effectively communicate all items that must be included as well as all background information prior to submitting the project for assessment. To do this, she attaches a release condition on the project Dropbox that requires a Checklist to be complete as well all required Content topics to be visited.
Vijay Brar, a student of Professor Saunders, wants to submit his deforestation project as soon as possible. However, before he can submit, he must ensure that he has completed all items in the pre-project Checklist as well as visited all topics related to deforestation. By checking the items off and reviewing the background information, Vijay is more confident that his project is complete and meets all requirements before he submits.
Benefit to the Professor/TA/Instructional Designer
Release Conditions allows the Professor / Course Designer to release tasks for students based on previous activities.
How does it enhance my teaching?
Allows the Professor to setup the course in a way that students are self-paced and components must be completed in advance of students continuing through the course.
How does it enhance my student’s learning?
The use of Release Conditions focuses the student to specific tasks that are required for completion prior attempting key assessment activities. This takes into consideration, individual pacing and learning path.
