What is D2L’s Brightspace?

D2L’s Brightspace is a Learning/Course Management System (LMS/CMS) platform that not only allows instructors to communicate with learners and post grades, but helps learners to continue learning outside of class time.

Brightspace features such as news, discussions board, quizzes and grading, enable instructors and course developers to create virtual content that can be accessed 24/7. This platform can be designed to provide learners with immediate feedback on their progress and Instructors with data on student comprehension of the learning materials.

About this Tutorial

This tutorial is designed to provide information, video tutorials and practice activities on how to use D2L Brightspace. The content can be reviewed as self-paced instruction or with an instructor/technician workshop facilitator. Check out the right menu to learn more about the various D2L Brightspace features.

Accessing D2L Brightspace

Who can access D2L Brightspace?

Champlain College Continuing Education instructors and staff.
Respective responsibilities are the following:

Champlain College D2L Administrator Responsibilities:

User access – Providing username and password
Site Set up – Course template, Homepages, navigation themes/bar
Site resources – Import / Export / Copy components
Learner management – Classlist
General Administration – Broken links, tools, system log

Instructor Responsibilities:
An instructor is responsible for developing and integrating their content on their D2L Brightspace course site. How much is developed and integrated is up to the instructor. Examples of content resources:

Topic content (syllabus, text, instructions, readings, videos, audios)
Assessment information (quizzes, grades, rubrics, surveys),
Communications (discussion questions, news announcements)

Step 1 - Access Requirements

Contact Champlain’s D2L Bightspace administrator to provide you with a username and password for D2L Brightspace.

Request the Administrator provide access to the following D2L course sites:
- Best Practices for Online Teaching and Learning (Recommended)
  – Request to have access as a student so you can view the course as a student would. Review the content and check out the information on content creation, best practices for online teaching, and learner engagement strategies.
  – You will need your username and password to access this site: https://terminuschamplain.com/d2l/home/6840)
- Course Structure Blueprint (Your D2L Brightspace Workspace)
  – Request to have access to your own Course Structure Blueprint as an instructor. You will be able to build, test and practice with your own D2L Brightspace course site. This site includes content suggestions and examples.
  – You will need your username and password to access this site: https://terminuschamplain.com/d2l/home/6842)Option if you have been part of previous D2L training at Champlain you may already have a course site set up. Consult Champlain’s D2L Brightspace administrator.

Step 2 - How to Access

From the administrator – You should receive a username and a temporary password for D2L Brightspace by email.

To change your temporary password – Set up a password
To begin using the D2L Brightspace open your web-browser and go to: Welcome to Brightspace by D2L
Log in with your credentials – username and password.

Check your access to the following sites via the dropdown menu top left of the D2L screen:
